• Which school is the best to attend?

  Each parent and child must decide which school is best for them. This decision is best made by visiting prospective schools, researching the schools via their web page and talking to teachers, parents, children and administrators.     

   There are many ways to research schools and their academic track record. Among these is the California Accountability Report Cards (SARC). California public schools annually provide information about themselves to the community allowing the public to evaluate and compare schools for student achievement, environment, resources and demographics.

  SOAR is a program that makes it easier for parents to play an active role in their children’s education. It is designed for military families and is easily accessible worldwide. Students can visit the web site and take an assessment aligned to state standards. SOAR will direct them to individualized tutorials to improve skills where needed.   Do you have a special needs child?
  Before you PCS from your current duty station:

  1. Contact your local special education counselor/director and request assistance as to what should be done before the transition to the new school. Write or contact the special education director for the state that you are going to and request local policies.
  2. Schedule an Annual, Review, and Dismissal meeting to discuss the progress your child has made since your last Individualized Education Program (IEP) review. Ask for written suggestions that may help your child and the staff at the new school.
  3. Request a copy of your child’s complete educational record to include a copy of the latest IEP. Hand carry all records, samples of your child’s work, and other information related to your child’s education.
  4. Contact your local Marine Corps Exceptional Family Member Program Coordinator. They can assist you with identifying resources at your new duty station.
